Guide for USTA League Captains

Thank you for being a captain! League Captains are the largest group of volunteers in the USTA. Your willingness to serve your team and the League in this leadership role is greatly appreciated. The following suggestions were compiled to make your job easier and to provide tips for success.

USTA League teams are formed in a wide variety of ways, from public parks to private country clubs. Throughout the country, matches are played indoors and out, scheduled or not, timed or played to completion, on a wide variety of court surfaces. Each Section of the USTA has its own unique aspects and opportunities, and the USTA Pacific Northwest is no exception.

We have compiled a short booklet of general guidelines for captains including topics such as forming a team, securing courts for practice and play, reporting scores, etc. As you read and discover you have questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact your USTA Pacific Northwest Local League Coordinator.

Please click here to view and print a PDF file of the Guide for USTA League Captains. If you are unable to open PDF files, please click here to view the guide in your web browser.

Last year, the USTA Pacific Northwest League Committee introduced the USTA League Sportsmanship Award to recognize teams and individuals who have best represented the qualities of being a good sport on and off the court throughout the league season. After evaluating many deserving nominations, the committee presented the first annual USTA League Sportsmanship Award to the Adult 2.5 Women's team from Bremerton Tennis and Athletic Club. Please click here to read more about this outstanding team and to view and print the sportsmanship award nomination form for the 2009 season.

Sportsmanship: Know The Code on court

The Code is essentially a summary of procedures and unwritten rules that custom and tradition dictate all players should follow. No system of rules will cover every specific problem or situation that may arise. If players follow the principles of The Code, they should always be able to reach an agreement, while at the same time making tennis more fun and a better game for all. The principles set forth in The Code shall apply in cases not specifically covered by the ITF Rules of Tennis and USTA Regulations.

If you and your teammates are not familiar with The Code, it's important that you take the time to read through it. If you are familiar, it's always a good idea to review. Please click here to view The Code.
